Garić grad is one of the oldest medieval fortified settlements in northern Croatia, located in the heart of Moslavačka gora, near the town of Podgarić. Along with the famous Medvedgrad, the Garić grad occupies an important place in Croatian history, and its origin dates back to 1256, when it was built by Ban Stjepan Šubić.
In addition to its military and defensive role, Garić grad also had a spiritual significance. In 1295, the arrival of the Paulines, monks of the Order of St. Paul the hermit, marked the foundation of the monastery, which became an important religious and cultural center. The monastery, with a church dedicated to St. Mary, has long been the center of the religious life of this region.
Unfortunately, the city did not last long before the Ottoman threat. In 1544, the Ottomans conquered and destroyed Garić grad, as well as the monastery and the church. After that, the city was abandoned, and over time only ruins remained.
Today, the ruins of Garić grad are a popular picnic spot and a favorite place for lovers of history, nature and hiking. They provide visitors with an insight into the rich past and special atmosphere of this historic place. Today, Garić grad attracts visitors with its history, legends and beautiful natural environment. You can take a walk through its double walls, see the defensive towers and enjoy a picnic in the inner courtyard. There is an interesting legend about a cursed princess who is waiting to be released with a kiss on Saint George’s Day at dawn so that the city will once again shine in its full glory. And the mysterious network of underground passages triggers additional curiosity and underlines the curiosities of this unexplored area.
