Every autumn in our region brings the smell of ripe corn, roasts on an open fire, and the warmth of community. Once upon a time, in times when agriculture was the foundation of every household, autumn brought one of the most important and joyful chores in the countryside. Yes, that was husking (peeling corn husks or corn cobs).
After the corn was harvested in the field and brought to the yards, family, neighbors, and friends would gather. In the darkness of autumn evenings, by the light of lanterns, the leaves were removed by hand from the corn cobs (komušina). The work was hard, but with songs, jokes, stories, and homemade refreshments, it turned into a real social event. Also, the komušina was not thrown away; it was a precious raw material. It was used to make straw mats for beds (mats), sturdy baskets, and baskets. Children made traditional dolls from the komušina, toys that still delight with their simplicity and beauty today.
Today, in modern times, the Velikogrđevačka Komušana takes us back to those roots and preserves this beautiful custom from being forgotten. Through staged performances of komušana, workshops on making komušina dolls, traditional games and songs, we preserve the identity of our region and pass it on to younger generations.
And that's why Komušana is not just an event to be seen and visited. It is an experience of tradition.
This year's program shows how much can be told through a single custom.
Visitors will be able to peek into the world of traditional skills through a workshop on making dolls from corn cobs, learn about weaving baskets from willow branches, and for those who want to make something with their own hands, there is also the opportunity to weave their own basket.
The youngest will be able to participate in the workshop "In the Footsteps of Bread - Miller's Workshop", try their hand at Komuš games and enjoy numerous activities prepared just for them.
And details such as Komušac braids inspired by hairstyles of yesteryear, ponies, old tractors, the Lovrak Express and the autumn smells of food prepared outdoors add a special charm.
Komušana has always been associated with food and a shared table. At this year's Komušana, visitors can expect a free lunch, roasting on an open fire, and a kučnica (steamed meat) eating competition. The kučnica attracts only the bravest!
In addition to all this, the local products fair will provide an opportunity to get to know and purchase products from local producers, while also choosing the finest corn bread.
Komušana is for the whole family!
While adults will be able to enjoy the fair, old crafts, a cultural and artistic program and an interpretive tour of the Lovrak Center, the youngest can expect workshops, games, free pony rides and a carousel with baskets.
Throughout the day, you will be able to visit an exhibition of oldtimer tractors, take a ride on the Lovrak Express, listen to the Set band, and also participate in the competition for the most beautifully decorated stand.
All of this makes Komušan a place where everyone can find something for themselves.
This year's 8th Veliko Grđevac Komušana will be held on October 17, 2026 in Veliko Grđevac.
Come for a day filled with tradition, local flavors, old crafts, games, and socializing. Come see how people used to work, create, socialize, and how that story can still be lived today.
