DOKUart, the international documentary film festival in Bjelovar, takes place at the beginning of October and lasts for a week. The festival, which started in 2006, has attracted numerous renowned artists and offered many Croatian premieres, including award-winning documentaries from renowned festivals. The organizer of the festival is the Association for the Promotion of Culture DOKUart, with the support of the City of Bjelovar, the Croatian Audiovisual Center and the Croatian Film Association.
The films are selected by Rada Šešić, who is a well-known documentary filmmaker and collaborator at many festivals. DOKUart was originally held in the Cultural Center, but since 2013 the festival has been held in the modern cinema hall of the Cultural and Media Center Bjelovar. DOKUart give out an audience award, and as part of the Little DOKUart program, documentaries by elementary school students from Croatia are presented, with prizes for the best works that schools use to improve media culture teaching.
In addition to film screenings, the festival offers a rich accompanying program with special screenings, lectures and round tables, including activities in alternative spaces and in the countryside, which encourages media literacy among young people.
