The Old Town of Sirač is a medieval stone fortress with an altitude type from the 14th century in a notable position – a gulch in the center of the settlement at the exit of the Bijela River from the Papuk massif. It is believed that the city of Sirač was built by the Templar Knights during the reign of Pope Clement V in 1309.
Historical documents mention the fort as “POSSESIO ZIRCH” when Leukus and Kokas Tiboldović divided the property. In 1389, King Sigismund took away the town of Sirač from the Tiboldović family and gave it to Gašpar Kaštelanović. In 1430, he received permission to build a fortress (CASTRUM) in Sirač. The Turks occupied the fort in 1542, after which it became one of the main forts where the aga stayed with 58 infantrymen and 17 horsemen and auxiliary Turkish troops.
Today, only a few defense walls remain from the fortress (the main northern rampart is 4 meters high), which testify to the turbulent past of the town of Sirač and its surroundings. Ideal for a spring trip and walk for everyone who likes to walk the trails of the mysterious past.
